Letter from teacher in South Korea

Dear Ms. Regler’s Class:

My name is Jean Bales and I am an American, teaching in S. Korea. While my students have sent back your questionaire, I just wanted to add a bit more information for you.

The people here are just like people that you find all over the world --- even your own neighborhood. Most are really nice, some, not so much. You know how we nod to each other and say “What’s up?” Well, here, everyone bows and says, “Anyo – ah- sayo,” and the students call each other “elder brother, elder sister, younger brother, younger sister,” according to however old they are. All disputes are settled with “rock, paper, scissors.” You know that game? Yes! In my classes, when I ask who will read first, or talk first……. They go to “rock, paper, scissors…….” And no one disputes the outcomes……… What a world would we live in, if everyone did that?? Could be great, don’t you think??

Students from age 6 to 14, go to school about the same hours that you all do, but there’s 1 BIG difference!! After school, they go to private schools, called “academies” or “hagwons,” trying to learn as much as possible…….. some academies, like the one that I work at, focus on English or other single subjects. Others focus on multiple subjects. It isn’t unusual for a 10 –12 year old student to go to 3 or 4 academies in one evening, after their regular school day. So, they often don’t get home until 9 or 10 p.m. Also, they go to their regular school 6 days a week, every other week, as well as academies on Saturdays and Sundays.

That’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? And, yes, they have homework to do, just like you………. It’s just that they have to do it AFTER all the hagwons…… As for the high school students: well, I have to tell you that they go to school at 8:00 a.m. and stay there until 10:00 p.m. Not as many of them go to hagwons in the evenings, but some do. And almost all of them do, on the weekends…….

Does that make you tired, just to hear about it?? Sometimes, it does me!! These kids are amazing……….

Most Koreans, especially people your age, are very interested in America and Americans……… They work hard at learning English, but have a hard time speaking it, because so few people in this country do….

I hope that you all will find the time to look up S. Korea on the internet, and see how beautiful their land and their culture is….. Their history is 5,000 years old!! Thank you so much for sharing your world, and your flat Stanleys with my students…….

Peace,

Jean B

  1. Your school is very different from the school I go to. I am in the 6th grade, and that is interseting that over there they go to 4 different schools. I only go to one school and after school. But at least the kids over there are ten times smarter then the kids i go to school with.

  10. Thank you for writing back. My question is how do you do all of that hard work? You must be so hardcore. You must learn a lot.It must be difficult to go to another school then just one school. I couldn't take something like that. All of you must be genuises by now.

  12. Dear MsJean B class
I do not like that the students go to school at 8:00am and come home at 10:00pm.Thats too much for them. How can the students go to three to four schools? We go to school at 800am and come home at about 3:30pm.Also we only go to one school and some students go to after school program but they do there homework then play.Do you think thats much better? I know that your country is smarter than us and learn more. But we learn slower than you.We are in school for five hours. We learn about four to five subjects a day.Dont that sound better? So when we come home we can do our homework and go outside and play.Thats sounds great. Don't you agree?
    Peace Hassanah

  16. After readinq about South Korean I was so interested because I got more facts how the schools are there and how old you have to be to go to school in South Korean. In America we just call schools "Schools" and I wonder if A relguar school is differnt from a Hagwons and Academies? Why do High School students have to stay in school until 10:00 pm? I know I wouldn't want to stay in school all day long if I was to live in South Korean. Why do they bow to say Any and what does that mean because I'm just so curious to know what its' meaning is and maybe I'll start usinq it.In America we just call each others by their name no elder sister or elder brother and young sister or young brother.I'm so glad that I learned about South Korean and I'm sure you'll love to hear more about America.

  17. Well Jean B. I think that it must be stressful to work 6 days a week in the united states we go to school 5 days a week.I think that it is weird that you go to school for six days a week. We think that it is weird that you guys go to school 6 days a week and you guys must think we dont learn alot because we have short amount of days as yall do. I cant last go to school for seven days a week.In the united states we have after school program because some students parents are still at work or the chlid needs to do something after school. So we have alot of different things between us an korea.

It has more differences than I think between Korean school and American school.
I think the biggest difference is Academy.
I want to say Academy and school's differences.
We don't pay money for school and it is indispensable. But We pay money for Academy and it's not indispensable.

  31. Dear Ms. Regler's class,
My students will be going back to their regular school on February 1, after their long winter vacation..... so, this week, they will be very busy finishing their 'vacation homework." Yes, their teachers give them homework to do even while they're on vacation! and, like everyone else in the world, they put it off till the last minute.*^^* they'll be back in touch very soon... I, as their teacher, am really enjoying your blogging and the videos that you have sent ~~ you all remind me so much of home........ love and peace to all of you and your teachers.... jean b.
